Former Transport Secretary, leadership candidate, and Sunak supporter Grant Shapps has been appointed as the new Home Secretary. He joins Jeremy Hunt as the second new occupier of a Great Office of State to have run for the leadership this summer and then backed Truss’s rival.

Suella Braverman has resigned as Home Secretary, reportedly over her sending an official document from a personal e-mail. Our Editor has tweeted to the effect that Braverman’s resignation was the product of the “mother of all rows about migration” and that “she was under pressure from Number Ten to announce liberalising migration plan which would make it easier for the OBR to say the Government would hit its growth target.”
Braverman’s resignation will not be unwelcome to Truss. Braverman was not following the leadership’s line on migration, and she seemed intent on carving out her own approach. On the other hand, it is the latest sign of a government in turmoil.
